Injury Time Out with Capilano Rehab: Massage Therapy

| February 22, 2016 | Reply

Massage Therapy continues to gain traction as an important part of individual health maintenance.  At Capilano Rehab Centre, we have a professional Registered Massage Therapy Team to help you recover from injury, soreness or to help facilitate your general well-being.  Our Massage Therapists have received intense academic training and had to complete 2,200 hours of hands on massage to obtain their certificates. They combine the modern sciences of anatomy and physiology in order to achieve a positive treatment result for you.   Capilano’s Massage Therapists have helped reduce tension headaches, hip tightness and nagging shoulder and upper back aches that come from training too hard in the gym or sitting too long at the computer.

How does massage work?

Therapeutic massage can speed recovery from aches and pains through the following:

· Increases circulation and tissue permeability

· Increases lymphatic and venous return

· Speeds up removal of accumulated lactic acid and other muscle waste products

· Decreases muscles stiffness, tension, spasm, pain and soreness

· Improves tissue elasticity

· Increases flexibility and range of motion

· Decreases recovery time from workouts faster than passive rest

Is therapeutic massage only for injuries?

No! You don’t need to be injured or in pain to enjoy a therapeutic massage, it can be used as a tool to help facilitate your positive outlook on life. Many people seek massage therapy regularly to help them perform at their best and feel fantastic about themselves.

Are there advantages to being treated by a trained therapeutic massage therapist?

Through the use of manual techniques that improve circulation, enhance muscular relaxation, and relieve pain, your therapeutic massage therapist not only focuses on the normalization of the soft tissues affected by stress, injury or illness, they can also help point you in the direction of other treatments that may benefit your recovery.

About the Author ()

I am Capilano Rehab Centre’s Community Care Coordinator. I have been with Capilano Rehab for 9 years primarily as a Physio Assistant, but also as a Receptionist. I have a Physical Education Degree from the University of Alberta, which I will eventually use when my two young children are grown up. In the mean time I am enjoying helping people in the Community through my role as Community Care Coordinator and bringing awareness to how a Physiotherapist can help you get back to the activities you love the most!
