Injury Time Out with Capilano Rehab: Knee Replacement Recovery

Biodex Updated Photo (3) (1024x900)Knee replacements have become a very successful operation for most candidates. Total Knee Replacements can be an effective and worthwhile way to increase your quality of life.  My own grandfather has had both of his knees replaced and even decided to learn how to snowboard after his first one!

The most common cause behind the need for a knee replacement is arthritis and wear and tear.  All of us are born with a soft cushion called cartilage that protects the ends of the bones in our knees.  Over time this cartilage wears away so your femoral head (thigh bone) rubs on the tibia (shin bone) condyles that creates granulation in your knee joint.  This rubbing can lead to bone spurs which can cause significant pain and stiffness.

After your specialist makes your knee all shiny and new, it is now up to you and your Physiotherapist to make sure it moves and gets strong.  After your surgery you will most likely have some swelling that can limit your range of motion and can also cause the muscles in your knee tighten or spasm to help protect your post op knee.  This combination, if left untreated can cause a significant decrease in your range of motion and affect your daily life.  The reason that flexibility is so important is that many of your everyday activities like rising from a seated position and getting in and out of a car all require significant knee movement.

In addition to basic therapy, Capilano Rehab Centre utilizes an advanced flexibility and post-operative strengthening system called the BIODEX™.  The BIODEX™ allows total knee replacement patient’s whose recovery is behind schedule to improve their flexibility via a continuous passive movement protocol.  And, if you have problems getting back your quadriceps strength, there is an isotonic protocol that allows you to work the muscles within your pain tolerance.  All in all, the BIODEX™ never pushes you past your tolerance level and can greatly speed up your post-surgical recovery.  The BIODEX™ not only is helpful for total knee replacements, but is also great for post-scope procedures and ACL repairs.

Capilano Rehab Centre is an authorized provider of post-surgical physiotherapy in the Allied Health Services-Edmonton Zone.  If you qualify, you may be eligible for up to 7 post-operative physical therapy visits and some pre-op visits as well.  So don’t delay, call Capilano Rehab Centre at 780-466-1104 to get started on your physiotherapy treatments!

I am Capilano Rehab Centre’s Community Care Coordinator. I have been with Capilano Rehab for 9 years primarily as a Physio Assistant, but also as a Receptionist. I have a Physical Education Degree from the University of Alberta, which I will eventually use when my two young children are grown up. In the mean time I am enjoying helping people in the Community through my role as Community Care Coordinator and bringing awareness to how a Physiotherapist can help you get back to the activities you love the most!
