Injury Time Out with Capilano Rehab: Compression Stockings

About-Sockwell-CompressionSummer is underway and more people are outdoors walking, running or cycling.  Have you noticed how many of them are wearing socks up to their knees? And not just the Grandfather’s!  Or soccer referees! Many active individuals are wearing compression stockings.

 Compression Stockings Background

Traditionally, compression stockings have been used to help increase blood flow in individuals with venous insufficiency and circulatory problems like varicose veins and swelling in their legs.  For these individuals, medical compression stockings exert pressure to their legs helping the veins transport the blood back to the heart to reduce blood pooling, swelling, and aching.

 Compression Stockings for Active Lifestyles!

In the past few years, compression stocking utilization has been on the rise amongst athletes of varying skill and competition level.  While they still serve the physiologic purpose of improving venous return and reducing edema, research and experience is showing that compression stockings can help with performance and recovery.

How Might Compression Stockings Help Me?

During exercise your working muscles need lots and lots of oxygen.  Well, oxygen is transported through your blood so now you have an increase in the blood that is flowing through your extremities.  Ever notice that your stomach is a little colder than the rest of your body after a run?  That is because you have less blood flowing to your stomach during exercise and more blood flowing to the muscles that are working.  Your veins have to work extra hard to help pump this increased blood back up to your heart.  At the same time your veins are working hard, your muscles are burning energy to meet the demands that you are placing on your body.  This energy break down leaves a waste by-product called lactic acid in your muscles.  The added compression from compression stockings helps increase this blood flow and waste by-product removal, decreasing that feeling of heavy tired legs during a long workout session and the day after a workout.

How Capilano Rehab Fits In to Outfit You

Capilano has a wide variety of compression stocking options to fit your exact leg needs.  We have also recently added a new line of Sockwell performance compression stockings with either moderate or firm compression for your activity needs.  Patients are favouring the Incline OTC sock with moderate compression to help with tired legs during and after physical activity, and the Plantar Ease Quarter and Plantar Ease Crew to help with sore feet at the end of a long work day.

And if you do have venous insufficiency and require medical compression stockings, our Bauerfeind line has been very beneficial for edema, varicose veins, and post-surgical swelling.  And our certified pedorthist will assess your legs and measure them precisely to ensure proper fit and comfortability.

No matter what your needs are for compression stockings, let Capilano Rehab Centre keep you standing, walking and running!  Call us at 780-466-1104 to book an appointment.
